• No safe level of mercury has EVER been established. Any amount of mercury in the body should be considered abnormal and dangerous.
  • The FDA remains virtually silent on the issue of mercury and has no realistic guidelines on the use of mercury for medical purposes (except for dental amalgam).
  • The Pharmaceutical industry and not the FDA, yielding to congressional pressure, has eliminated further use of mercury in medicinal products.
  • The only organization that continues to insist that mercury is safe is the ADA (American Dental Association).  With arrogance of monumental proportion they continue to endorse silver amalgam fillings as safe when placed in the mouth.
  • The EPA is well aware of the health hazards of mercury and has strict regulations with respect to contamination of water, air and soil.
  • With the ADA "Dug in" on the issue state legislatures are not amused.  They clearly are appalled at this ADA diatribe.  Four states currently take a consumer protection posture and require informed consent measures that mandate dentists to inform patients in writing that hazardous materials are used in their dental practice and must have the patient sign to this effect before mercury amalgam can be placed in their mouth.
  • The U.S. Legislature has also become involved. A bill introduced by California representative Diane Watson (D. Los Angeles) if passed will make it mandatory that all "silver" fillings be phased out by 2005.
  • The pharmaceutical industry has frequently used a mercury product know as thimerosal as a preservative in many manufactured medicines.  This has been especially true for vaccines and up until last year all vaccines contained the mercury laden substance.  Due to governmental pressures they have agreed to remove thimerisol in all vaccines and at this time no vaccines are manufactured with this substance.  The problem however is that there is about a 3 year stock pile of previously manufactured vaccines containing thimerosal that are being distributed first.  Then the mercury free vaccines will be available.
  • The EPA has set the "SAFE" exposure level of mercury vapor at 10nmol/day.
  • The federal government now admits that the average U.S. adult receives 20nmol/day from their amalgam fillings alone.
  • The amount of mercury in ONE filling is colossal by scientific standards, one filing contains 750mg of mercury.  Enough to contaminate a 10 acre lake making it off limits for human contact for the remainder of this century.
  • MERCURY has been eliminated from all other uses in the human body, including vaccines, disinfectants, and other oral uses.
  • All other health care associations support full disclosure, while the American Dental Association hides its use of MERCURY. It continues to use the term "Silver Fillings" even though the main ingredient in amalgam is at a minimum 51% pure mercury.
  • The ADA receives money from MERCURY amalgam manufacturers through its Seal of Acceptance program, in contrast with the American Medical Association, which rejected taking fees for product endorsements.
  • The ADA holds patents on amalgam (since expired), furthering its business interests by the continued use of MERCURY in dentistry.
  • The ADA endorses pre-Civil War medicine, saying amalgam is justified because its use began in 1850!
  • The ADA says MERCURY dental fillings are safe to use in children's teeth.
  • In 1997, MERCURY amalgam filling manufacturer Dentsply stated that MERCURY amalgam fillings are "contraindicated" (meaning DO NOT USE) for children and pregnant women.
  • The American Dental Association is still calling MERCURY amalgam fillings "silver" and denies MERCURY fillings can ever be dangerous!
  • Federal and most state medical insurance programs only pay for MERCURY fillings because they are the least expensive, so poor people and poor children are especially at risk.
  • U.S. Public Health Service: The largest component of amalgam is MERCURY.
    ADA: Amalgam is "silver" fillings.
  • U.S. Public Health Service: For most people, the leading cause of MERCURY toxicity is amalgam fillings, not fish.
ADA: You only get traces of MERCURY vapor in your body.
  • U S Public Health Service: MERCURY is a dangerous neuro-toxin; the MERCURY in amalgam goes to the brain, and to a fetus through the placenta.
ADA: MERCURY exposure is like having an "allergy" to dust or pollen!
  • American Medical Association: Don't take $$$ for endorsements.
ADA: Receives fees from MERCURY amalgam manufacturers while calling amalgam "safe".
